How to Get Obsidian in Windrose: Complete Farming Guide

Overview

Obsidian is a rare volcanic material in Windrose, used for crafting high-tier weapons, armor, and ship upgrades. It is one of the hardest materials to obtain due to the dangerous environment where it spawns. This guide covers every method to get Obsidian, including mining locations, required gear, and crafting recipes.

Obsidian Locations

Obsidian is found exclusively at Ember Crater, a hidden volcanic island in the southwest region. There are 8 Obsidian nodes scattered around the crater. Each node yields 2-3 Obsidian per mining attempt. Nodes respawn every 15 minutes. The island is covered in lava pockets that deal 50 damage per second, so careful navigation is essential. A secondary source is the Magma Forge dungeon on Skull Island, where Obsidian can be looted from chests.

Required Gear and Preparation

Mining Strategy

Arrive at Ember Crater during calm weather, as volcanic eruptions occur during storms and make mining impossible. Equip Heat Resistance Gear before stepping on the island. Navigate carefully between lava pockets, staying on dark rock paths. Mine each Obsidian node quickly (5 seconds per node with a Reinforced Pickaxe). After mining all 8 nodes, you will have 16-24 Obsidian. Retreat to your ship immediately if an eruption begins. Total yield per trip: 16-24 Obsidian in about 10 minutes.

• Volcanic Hull Plating: 20 Obsidian + 10 Iron Ingots = +800 HP and 20% fire resistance
• Ember Smith Quest: Turn in 5 Obsidian to unlock the Ember Smith as a permanent crafting NPC

Pro Tips

Complete the Ember Smith quest first to unlock permanent crafting access. This requires turning in 5 Obsidian. After that, save Obsidian for the Obsidian Cutlass and Volcanic Hull Plating, as these provide the biggest power spikes.
