Windrose's world is divided into three distinct biomes, each with its own level range, resources, enemies, and unlock conditions. Progression is gated by boss fights — you cannot access the next biome until you defeat the current biome's boss. Understanding what each biome offers, where to find key resources, and what dangers await is essential for efficient exploration and preparation.
Biome Overview
| Biome | Level Range | Boss | Special Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal Jungle | Lv 1–5 | None (starting area) | None — available from the start |
| Foothills | Lv 6–10 | Thomas Richards | Defeat Thomas Richards in the Coastal Jungle |
| Cursed Swamps | Lv 11–15 | Israel Hands | Defeat Israel Hands + obtain Charon's Obol |
Tide System
Windrose features a tide system that affects coastal and low-lying areas across all biomes. The tide follows a real-time cycle that shifts between low tide and high tide. During low tide, water recedes to reveal previously submerged areas — including caves, resource nodes, shipwrecks, and passages that are completely inaccessible during high tide.
Key facts about the tide system:
- Low tide reveals hidden areas. Shipwrecks, sea caves, and submerged resource nodes become accessible. These often contain rare materials and unique loot.
- High tide is dangerous. Areas that were walkable during low tide can become flooded, potentially trapping you if you are not careful. Watch the water level.
- The cycle is predictable. You can see the tide indicator on your HUD. Plan your coastal exploration around low tide windows.
- Tide affects all three biomes. Even the Cursed Swamps have tidal zones that reveal hidden paths during low tide.
Before heading into a new area, check the tide indicator. If it is near high tide, wait for low tide — you might discover a sea cave with rare resources that would be completely invisible during high water. Always carry enough food and a repair kit when exploring tidal zones, as getting caught by rising water without supplies can be fatal.
Coastal Jungle — Lv 1 to 5
The Coastal Jungle is your starting biome. You wash ashore here with nothing, and it serves as your introduction to Windrose's mechanics. The environment is a mix of sandy beaches, dense jungle vegetation, rocky outcrops, and shallow coastal waters. Enemies are relatively weak, making it a safe place to learn combat, base building, and resource gathering.
Key Resources
| Resource | Where to Find | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Trees, beachcombing (washed up logs) | Construction, bonfires, tools, ship building |
| Plant Fiber | Jungle undergrowth, beach plants | Rope, basic armor padding |
| Loose Stone | Beachcombing, rocky outcrops | Stone tools, workbench, forge foundation |
| Scallops | Beachcombing, shallow water | Early food source |
| Copper Ore | Ore nodes in rocky areas | Copper ingots (forge), mid-tier crafting |
| Iron Ore | Deeper jungle ore deposits | Iron ingots (forge), weapons, tools |
| Cloth | Enemy drops, abandoned camps | Tents, beds, sail components |
| Coconut | Palm trees along the coast | Food, water source |
Dangers
- Coastal Bandits — Human enemies with basic weapons. Good for learning combat fundamentals.
- Wild Boars — Aggressive but low-damage animals. Easy to kite and kill for meat.
- Jungle Creepers — Ambush predators that hide in dense vegetation. Watch for rustling foliage.
- Environmental hazards — Poison plants, thorny bushes, and unstable ground near cliffs.
The Coastal Jungle should be thoroughly explored before attempting the Foothills boss. Complete all available quests to maximize your level (target level 5 to 6), build a proper base, and craft metal tools and weapons. The boss fight against Thomas Richards is a significant step up from jungle enemies — preparation matters.
Foothills — Lv 6 to 10
The Foothills unlock after defeating Thomas Richards in the Coastal Jungle. This biome features elevated terrain, rocky ridges, open grasslands, and forested valleys. The environment is less claustrophobic than the jungle but introduces tougher enemies, new resource types, and more complex terrain navigation.
Unlock Condition
You must defeat Thomas Richards to unlock the Foothills. Thomas Richards is a formidable combat encounter — bring your best weapon, a shield, repair kits, and food. Review the Combat Fundamentals guide for mechanics, and ensure you have at least 5 talent points invested for the fight.
Key Resources
| Resource | Where to Find | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Ore (abundant) | Mountain rock faces, cave entrances | Iron ingots, steel precursor |
| Coal | Mountain deposits, cave systems | Smelting steel, forge fuel |
| Gold Ore | Rare nodes in deep caves | Gold ingots, high-tier crafting, currency |
| Leather | Hunting mountain goats, deer | Armor crafting, tool upgrades |
| Hardwood | Mountain evergreen trees | Advanced construction, ship upgrades |
| Herbs | Alpine meadows, rocky crevices | Potions, healing consumables, buffs |
| Pitch | Tar seeps in rocky areas | Ship construction, torch crafting, water-proofing |
Dangers
- Highland Bandits — Better equipped than Coastal Bandits. Some carry firearms.
- Mountain Lions — Fast, high-damage ambush predators. Extremely dangerous if caught off guard.
- Rock Elementals — Slow but massively damaging. Require heavy weapons or firearms to break their armor.
- Cave Bats — Swarm enemies in underground areas. Can overwhelm you in narrow tunnels.
- Falling hazards — Cliff edges and unstable slopes. Environmental deaths are common for careless explorers.
The Foothills are where firearms become truly useful. Highland Bandits carry shields that are difficult to break with melee alone — a well-placed rifle shot cracks their guard and creates an opening. Carry a pistol or rifle as a secondary weapon once you reach this biome. This is also where you unlock the Brigantine at the Wharf.
Cursed Swamps — Lv 11 to 15
The Cursed Swamps are the endgame biome in Early Access. This dark, foreboding environment features stagnant water, twisted vegetation, ancient ruins, and an oppressive atmosphere. Enemies are at their most dangerous here, and the environment itself is hostile — swamp water slows movement, toxic gas lingers in pockets, and visibility is limited.
Unlock Conditions
You must meet TWO conditions to enter the Cursed Swamps:
1. Defeat Israel Hands — The Foothills boss. A challenging fight that requires good gear and combat proficiency.
2. Obtain Charon's Obol — A special quest item that grants passage through the swamp's mystical barrier. Without it, the entrance is blocked by an impassable fog wall.
Key Resources
| Resource | Where to Find | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Ingots | Forge (iron + coal) | Highest-tier weapons and tools, Frigate construction |
| Shadow Wood | Twisted swamp trees | Endgame construction, dark-themed decorations |
| Swamp Crystals | Crystal nodes in ruins and caves | Enchantments, endgame crafting recipes |
| Ancient Relics | Ruins, boss loot, hidden chests | High-tier equipment, faction reputation items |
| Venom Glands | Swamp creature drops | Poison-coated weapons, antidote crafting |
| Moonstone | Rare nodes in deep swamp areas | Late-game enchantments and legendary crafting |
| Bone | Undead creature drops | Bone weapons, decorative trophies |
Dangers
- Undead Pirates — Reanimated enemies resistant to standard damage. Require specific weapon types or enchantments.
- Swamp Wyrms — Large serpentine creatures emerging from water. Extremely high damage and poison attacks.
- Will-o'-Wisps — Spectral entities that drain stamina on contact. Dangerous because they target your most important combat resource.
- Toxic Gas Pockets — Environmental hazards dealing damage over time. Watch for bubbling water and discolored air.
- Deep Water — Certain areas significantly slow movement. Navigate carefully and plan your route.
- The High Priestess — The biome's ultimate boss. Tests everything you have learned.
Do not enter the Cursed Swamps underleveled or under-geared. You should be level 11 minimum with full steel equipment, 14 talent points invested, food, repair kits, and a Brigantine or better docked nearby.
Carry antidotes at all times — poison from Swamp Wyrms and toxic gas is a constant threat. Build a forward base near the swamp entrance with a bonfire, bed, and storage. Use the tide system to access hidden sea caves along the coastline for rare loot during low tide.
Progression Summary
Windrose's biome progression is straightforward but demanding. Each biome builds on the last — Coastal Jungle resources feed Foothills progression, and Foothills resources enable Cursed Swamps survival. The key is thorough exploration at each stage. Complete all quests, gather surplus materials, and fully upgrade your gear before pushing to the next biome.
The biome order also aligns with ship progression: Ketch in the Coastal Jungle, Brigantine in the Foothills, and Frigate in the Cursed Swamps. For material farming routes and detailed ship requirements, see our Ship Building Guide. For combat preparation, read the Combat Fundamentals guide.
